It is native to eastern North America, ranging from southern parts of eastern and central Canada and to northern parts of the eastern and central United States, and is often found in northern hardwood or pine forests, as well as on the edges of clearings and shaded roadsides.
Several Native American tribes used the young leaves as both food for medicinal purposes.
