Early meadow-rue can be found in woodlands throughout North American from the Rockies to the east coast.
The plant prefers light shade in medium to moist well-drained soils, though it can adapt to partial sun. The flowers of the male plants are more striking than that of the females.
Another common name for Early meadow-rue is quicksilver-weed. The botanical name name, “diocum”, refers to the Greek word meaning “two households” reflecting the fact that male and female flowers occur on separate plants.
