Early Goldenrod is a showy, easy to grow plant that attracts a wide variety of butterflies, bees and birds. It produces cascades of yellow composite flowers early in the season and can be used as a cut flower.
Attracts many kinds of insects, including long-tongued and short-tongued bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, moths. Eastern Goldfinch, Tree Sparrow, and Swamp Sparrow eat the seeds.
Early goldenrod is native to central and eastern North America generally occurring in prairies, open woods and along dry, rocky roadside.
The plant prefers to dry to medium, well-drained soil and likes full to partial sun exposure. It is not susceptible to many pests or diseases, though powdery mildew may occur late in the year shadier areas. If grown in a formal setting, the colonies should be thinned periodically.
Early goldenrod is so named because it is one of the earliest goldenrods to bloom. Other common names for the plant include plume goldenrod and yellow top.
