The aromatic blossoms attract a wide variety of butterflies and bees and it is a larval host plant for the Raspberry pyrausta butterfly. It also attracts predatory wasps that control grubs, pest caterpillars, and other harmful insects, as well as being deer and rabbit resistant.
Dotted horsemint is generally found in dry prairies and Oak savannas throughout the eastern half of North America.
Dotted Mint is a biennial that easily self-seeds establishing a permanent presence in sandy soils with plenty of light. It does not establish as well in heavier soils or in areas where it is in competition with large plants. It is more drought tolerant than other Monardas.
Other common names for Dotted horsemint include spotted beebalm and horsemint.
