Cup plant flowers are used by butterflies, bees and hummingbirds, while birds eat the seeds and perch on the strong stems. Finches are especially drawn to the seeds.
The plant is found naturally throughout central and eastern North America.
Cup Plant is long-lived and adaptable to a range of soil types. Because of its large tap root and system of rhizomes, it does not transplant well unless it is a young plant.
The plant was used medicinally by several Native American tribes.
